On Bastards
Richard Carter FOFOCD (Founder Of Friends of Charles Darwin - eat yer heart out, Pickwick) recently commented that the city academies in the North East (funded by the Vardy foundation) are guilty of the bastardisation science since they teach creationism and aim to bring biblical Christianity into all aspects of the curriculum.
They're certainly guilty of corrupting science and perverting education, and I remember cheering when Professor Steve Jones live on TV eschewed creationist academic circumlocution in favour of the verbal knee to the balls when he said that people who taught creationism were lying to children.
But bastardisation? I sat through the early stages of an attempt to found a Christian Democrat Party in Britain, and heard Michael Schluter and a bevvy of Christian camp followers damn and blast single mothers and their offspring as one of the evils of the world, exemplars of the collapse of a civilised society.
When confronted by a skinhead, ju-jitsu practising bastard (me) who also happened to be an assistant to one of their number (an MP), it is remarkable how flabby their Christianity happened to be. Deuteronomy neutered.
What is wrong with us that our name should be a term of abuse? Creationists choose to be so. Racists could read and reason their way to enlightenment. I was born a bastard. (Isn't English great?) It gets worse when an organisation one respects like the BBC uses the archaic term illegitimate to describe those born outside marriage.
Hath not a bastard eyes, do we not bleed when you cut us? Are we not everywhere? Change 'bastard' for 'Nigger', 'Chink' or 'Paki' and we have racism of the worst, unthinking sort. Bastards can no more change our identity and provenance than people with non white skin can change that fact.
We must reclaim the word: bastard is worth more than the lazy description of the result of an unmarried fuck, or a French loaf. It's a great word: bastard. I'm one. The National Bastards' Society starts here (well it starts on Wednesday when I can be arsed to design the page). I am happy to devolve power to the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish branches when they form. Bastards are naturals when it comes to subsidiarity.
We shall campaign to stop the media abuse of 'bastard' and 'illegitimate', and now that most legal impediments have been removed we'll find some other chip for our shoulders, or find a way way of having some fun with it.
Like removing the government. How many of us are there out there? The grey vote could suddenly look small. Or at least slow over the first ten yards. Join now. You don't have to not have a father. Honorary bastard status available to all.
